Title: Right By Your Side
Pairing: Andy Murray/Novak Djokovic
Rating: PG

Warnings: nothing particularly (unless you don't know the result yet)
Summary: Andy saves his tears at the Australian Open for the locker room
A/N: I had to work throughh my feelings somehow, didn't I?
Word count: 573

Andy drops down onto the bench in the locker room. He shouldn’t, of course- he probably won’t be able to get up for hours now- but he’s lost the ability to care. He leans his head back and tries to breathe deeply, but ends up with a series of shaky, shallow breaths instead. He absent-mindedly starts rifling through his bags in the hopes of finding something to distract himself with. He freezes when he finds a post-it note with a heart drawn on it, tucked underneath one of his shirts. It’s from Novak, he knows this without a doubt, and he takes a few seconds to wonder exactly how and when Novak got this into his bag before he starts crying so harshly that it’s already burning the back of his throat. He’s still crying when Novak walks into the locker room several minutes later.

Novak stops and stares at Andy for a minute. He wants to make it better, to hold Andy until the tears stop, but it’s far too soon for him to be able to do that (it’s too soon for anyone to be able to do that, but for him of course it will take longer).

Andy knows when Novak walks into the room, but it’s a few minutes before he can bring himself to look up. He blinks a couple of times and then just stares at Novak.

Novak nods and gives Andy the briefest of smiles- that’s about as comforting as Andy will let him be right now- before walking through to the showers.

Andy watches Novak leave and then runs a hand down his face. He knows it will get better, that at some point today, maybe soon if he’s lucky, this will all stop hurting, but right now it’s all still too much.

--

Andy can’t sleep, but it’s not really a surprise so he’s finding plenty of things to occupy his time. His thoughts drift back to Novak more often than he would like and he’s finally able to smile at those thoughts again. He stares at the post-it note (it’s stuck on the desk just in front of his trophy) for what feels like hours before reaching over and grabbing a piece of the hotel paper and a pen from the bedside table. He clicks the pen several times before scrawling a smiley face on the paper. He’s intending to stand up so he can find his way over to Novak’s hotel room and hand him this or even just push it under the door, but even thinking about moving right now is too much of an effort. Instead, he takes a picture of the paper on his phone and texts it to Novak. He climbs into bed, feeling much more at ease with everything, and closes his eyes.

--

Andy wakes up at some point during the night with Novak plastered against his side and muttering softly in his sleep. He turns over so that he’s facing Novak and just watches Novak for a few minutes. He wonders briefly how Novak got here and when, but soon enough that really doesn’t matter. He presses a brief kiss to Novak’s lips before settling against Novak and closing his eyes. He’s asleep within seconds; he’s finally back to a place where everything makes sense again and where trophies are the last thing on his mind because he already has everything he could ever need.

This was so lovely. You capture how truly awful it must be sometimes to be with someone and yet have to deal with either beating them, or being beaten. It can't be easy on either of them; I so totally love the little post its, SOOO CUUTE.

I feel like I shouldn't be allowed to comment on Andy anymore, seeing as I may have brought the 'unlucky' clouds to follow him. I am pleased for Novak, and Andy was brilliant. Just an extra day's rest between Roger and Novak would have made all the difference. To make up for it and to bring good luck, I have a new tennis icon.

I think these two probably have a harder time dealing with it than Roger and Rafa do, but that's probably more about Andy's issues of not feeling good enough or something. I don't know, but I feel like Roger and Rafa could probably be happier about the other winning than Andy or Novak could. Maybe.

Things could definitely have been a little different if Andy had had a bit more rest, yeah, but it wasn't to be thid time sadly, but I think Andy seemed much more at ease this time and I think he knows he's going to be there again (because he totally will).
That's a very nice icon indeed

Yes, I'm sure you're right. It's their intense brooding natures that would make it much more difficult for them to handle. Rafa would probs just yell and throw things for a while when Roger beats him, then it would be over. Roger, is just way too cool to be even upset by Rafa winning, besides he knows he'll get great sex ;) However, I feel both may be a tad smug when they win - I'm looking at YOU Roger!

He def will. Just read he's pulled out of next Davis Cup round to get the clay court practice in before the French Open. Not sure what I'll do when Rafa is back? I'll just have to have two favourites.

I don't think losing to Roger is as bad for Rafa as losing to anyone else because you know Rafa still thinks of Roger as the best there is so maybe it's a little easier to take losing to someone like that and I think Roger has been around for long enough to be able to be more accepting about losing (unless he loses to Novak, which you know would piss him off severely) and when he loses to Rafa, he gets to see Rafa smile and that's always nice. See, now, I think Roger is the least smug of them all (at least of the top ones)

I don't think Rafa will be quite as good as normal when he first comes back so maybe support Andy for a while longer and only start thinking properly about Rafa again when he's fully back to himself. And two favourites is good until they play each other

Oh yes...Rafa smile, Rafa pout, Rafa anything really. I was worried for Roger in Aus; don't think I can bear to see him loose his form. I'd rather he retired than for that to happen. But it's not happening yet so I'm happy.

Funny, of the top four I'd place Roger 4th of the players I'd lke to see. Not sure why, I think it's the swiss efficiency. He's a fantastic player, but there's something metronomic about his wins. Guess it's cause I don't see the emotion in him in the same way. Felt the same about Borg and Sampras. I think my feelings that's he's smug comes from those blazers he wears at Wimbledon - please just stop it!

For sure Rafa will need matchplay to hit top form, but I'm looking forward to it. See, there is my infamous fence sitting again. Still two favourites, even when they're playing each other, is win win for me... and involves much less stress:)

He's still making semi-finals of Slams so it's all good. And, yeah- I don't think I could handle him retiring either, not now with all the other retirments/potential retirements in all the other sports happening soon or now or last year. People need to stop leaving, damn it!

That efficiency is precisely why I love watching him so much- there's no doubting this is someone amazing and that is always something special to see
But the blazers are part of the rules and you know Roger always sticks to the rules

I can't wait for him to come back either
Even when my two favourites play, I always end up picking one over the other though I might claim to be neutral

At least we still have Jens, and er ....David Beckham?

Yes we are in the presence of a genius that is for sure. One of the commentators said last week that it's never been easier to break into the top 10 of men's tennis, but never harder to break into the top 4. We are lucky to live in such times.

The white, monogrammed blazer outfit is in the rules? I will always like the rule breakers more ;b

And here I was thinking 2013 was never going to be as good as 2012 for sport. Right cheered up now:D

No. No mention of Beckham here. None. At all

That sounds about right. It certainly makes for generally exciting semi-finals and finals

You have to wear white at Wimbledon and that sort of outfit is really traditional so of course Roger went for it. I kinda wanna write fic about him flipping out about having to wear red at Wimbledon for the Olympics

Oh, this year could have some amazing moments too.

... and I so didn't think Paris and Fashion. No. Not once. Honest.

I SO HAD THAT THOUGHT TOO when I saw Roger in red. Not that I should write a fic (obviously), but that it must feel very weird for him.

I am looking forward to this year, Six Nations tomorrow, and Fabu in Qatar.

Like I could hate him even more than i do already. Paris is too close for him for my liking

I think he probably had the toughest time dealing with that

Most of what I'm looking forward too is happening later. Though the international football friendlies next week provide much potential joy

Prob shouldn't tell you that the kids are to be schooled in the UK then. Deep breaths, now it'll be fine.
Here's to 2013, and all our favourite things.
