Steven is so busy throwing things into his locker and running over every single second of the game to realise that his phone is beeping until someone tells him to turn it the fuck off. He mutters angrily for a moment before roughly pulling his phone from his bag and opening the message he’s just gotten. He finds himself smiling before he’s even finished reading the words because he knows exactly who they’re from- Xabi.

          I love you

Steven curses over how easy it is for Xabi to make him feel better, but he doesn’t stop smiling. He types out an awkward reply and then closes his locker. He leans back against the locker door and turns to the side.

Jamie squeezes his eyes shut and turns his head away.

“Look at me. Hey.” Pepe, knelt on the floor at Jamie’s feet, reaches up and touches a hand to Jamie’s cheek. “Look at me.”

Jamie grits his teeth, but turns his head. He opens his eyes and looks down at Pepe.

“This isn’t how I wanted to end.”

“It is not over.” Pepe takes hold of Jamie’s hands and presses kisses to each of Jamie’s knuckles. “It is not over.”

Jamie shakes his head.

“I won’t get… We won’t get anything else, not now, not when I’m here.”

“It is not over.” Pepe squeezes Jamie’s hands tightly. “We will not forget you.”

“That doesn’t matter, not without the trophies, not without…”

“I will not forget you.”

Jamie tries to scowl, but he can’t manage it, not with how Pepe is speaking to him. He sighs heavily, but squeezes Pepe’s hands tightly- that’s as demonstrative as he’s willing to get right now. He leans his head back and looks across to the other side of the room.

“Back off.” Martin wrenches his locker open.

Daniel steps forward, blocking Martin’s way to his locker.

Martin bares his teeth and glares at Daniel.

“No.” Daniel folds his arms across his chest. “We are talking about this.”

“I am finished talking about it with you.”

“No, you’re not. This is not over.”

“Yes, it is.” Martin tries to push Daniel out of the way, but it doesn’t really work.

“No, it isn’t. Look.” Daniel puts a hand on Martin’s shoulder. “It’s starting to affect the way you’re playing. You can’t let this keep happening. You need to talk to the kid and…”

“His name is Martin.” Martin shoves Daniel out of the way and slams his locker shut. “And he is none of your fucking business.” He glares at Daniel for a second before storming towards the showers, barely noticing what’s going on around him as he passes by.

“What the fuck, yeah? I mean…”

“Oh, shut up.”

“Come on, you know…”

“Seriously- shut up.” Jonjo drops his boots on the floor and looks at Raheem. “This isn’t about you. No one cares how pissed you are- we’re all feeling it already- so, really, do us all a favour and just shut up.” He stands up, intending to go somewhere, but stops when the door to the locker room opens.

Brendan steps into the locker room and takes a quick look around before speaking.

“Well played boys- let’s do that every game.”

I'm pleased you worked it out in fic :)

Wow, seems the level of angst in the locker room, matches the epicness if the match itself. I especially liked the Carra interlude. I never really thought about his season in those terms I guess; that he's going to go through a whole series of 'last times' and goodbyes. It must be an awful feeling, glad he's got Pepe.
Nice touch by the manager too. Just checking though.. He was being supportive and not sarcastic.. Yes?

I think after that match, there really would have been all kinds of feelings in that there locker room
I sort of have this really brief idea about his very last game too. Not that I really want to think that much about it. I've got such a thing for Carra/Pepe right now and it's so nice to be able to write something for them

One can never really tell with Brendan Rodgers :P But really he's being honest here- I don't think he ever really criticises the players
