Seb was convinced that he’d never get to see Mark again, to hold him or to touch him or to kiss him or to love him, but they’d worked it out- they were happy. He was smiling again when he thought he’d be miserable for the rest of his life (he’d told Mark about that feeling and Mark had just laughed- they’d been apart for barely over a week after all). He was happy- he and Mark were working again, even better than they had been before and he wasn’t willing to let that go. He walked into dinner, too caught up in his own joy to notice the strange looks everyone was giving him. He dropped into the seat next to Mark and just watched Mark for a minute. He reached out towards where Mark’s hand was resting on the table and frowned heavily when Mark pulled his hand away. His worries were eased slightly when he saw Mark pick up a cup of coffee- that was definitely a reasonable excuse for moving. He hesitated, staring at Mark for another few minutes, before daring to reach out towards him again. He knew that he touched Mark- he had a distinctive memory of feeling Mark tense beneath his touch- but it was barely a second later that Mark was pushing his hand away.

“Don’t touch me.”

Seb’s eyes widened. He tried to reach back out towards Mark, but he didn’t get the chance.

Mark stood up and stepped back, out of Seb’s reach.

“How could you?”

Seb opened and closed his mouth a few times before speaking.

“Mark, please. I don’t understand.”

“It’s all a fucking joke to you, isn’t it?”

Seb tried to speak again, but Mark was storming out of the room before he got the chance to say a word. He stared at the spot Mark had been stood in for several minutes before slowly turning around. He looked around the room and wonders how he could have failed to notice those looks before. He stared down at his hands, half-expecting everyone to yell at him, but there are minutes of silence before Christian is talking to him.

“Do you know what you said today, Seb?”

“Said?” Seb frowned- he hadn’t talked to Mark since this morning when they were very much happy. “I haven’t even… No.” He put a hand to his mouth when the realisation hit him. “I didn’t mean…”

“Did you expect him to let that one go too? Doing it in the race is one thing- that’s your job- but why didn’t you leave it out there?”

“I did. They asked and asked and… I love him.”

“That’s not enough anymore. He…” Christian shook his head. “You two are going to be the death of me. You’ll have to find a way to work together and I don’t care how you do it. This goes no further than today. Do you understand me?”

Seb bit on his lower lip, but nodded.

“I will fix it.” Seb stood up. “I will.” He started walking towards the door.

“And in future, Seb, please learn when to keep your mouth shut- you are making all of our jobs infinitely more difficult.”

--

Christian’s words echoed in Seb’s mind as he rushed towards Mark’s room. He didn’t mean it. Oh, god, he didn’t mean it. He had to fix this, do whatever it took. He was banging on the door to Mark’s room for almost five minutes before he realised that it was open. He hesitated for a few seconds before pushing the door open and stepping inside. He looked around the dark room several times before his eyes adjusted enough to be able to make out Mark’s outline by the window. He took a few steps forward and opened his mouth, but no words came out.

Mark had known Seb would follow him from the second he’d left the room, but now Seb was here he wasn’t sure what to do.

Seb pushed the door shut and walked across the room. He stopped a few paces back from Mark. He looked around for the light switch, but before he could even take a step towards it, Mark was speaking.

“Don’t do it. I don’t want to look at you.”

Seb clamped his mouth shut- he remembered Mark saying that before and, not long afterwards, things got bad for him. He turned to the side and looked at Mark.

Mark clenched his jaw and stared out of the window.

Seb reached out towards Mark, but he could practically feel Mark flinch from where he was stood so he drew his hand back.

Mark folded his arms across his chest.

“I didn’t hear. I didn’t understand. I’d ignore them anyway. I’d do it again. He didn’t deserve it.” Mark slowly turned his head to the side to look at Seb. “I don’t care. I don’t love him. That’s what you really wanted to say, isn’t it?”

“No, Mark.” Seb reached out towards Mark. “I would never…”

“Stop. I don’t want to hear it.”

“Please.”

“No. No! This shit was supposed to be over with, Seb- we were supposed to forget about it and move on. You said you forgave me, that it was over, that… We’re not back to how it was and we can’t even make it work now.” Mark shook his head. “You never really forgave me, did you?”

“I…”

“I don’t wanna do this anymore. Just go.”

“Mark.”

“I said go!” Mark had moved- turned to the side and grabbed Seb’s arms- before he even realised it. “Go!”

Seb bit back a gasp, but willed himself not to move.

“You would not do that again.”

“No.” Mark leant forward. “That would be too easy.” He pushed Seb away. “Go.”

“Please.”

“GO!”

Seb stood there for a minute, staring at Mark.

“I love you.”

Mark had turned away and was staring out of the window again.

Seb took a small step forward.

“Please remember that. Always.”
